Have you ever felt like achieving your dreams and goals is a slow, painstaking process? Like walking through mud or thick, powdered snow...
The weight of unachieved dreams, goals and the pressure from not yet being there can be rough.
Perhaps one of the simplest struggles we go through as humans is learning how to get out of our own way, and move closer to our dreams and goals. I know firsthand, as for many years my self-sabotaging behavior left me miles away from my potential.
Anyone I've ever spoken to has dreams and goals, and most of those people have guilt and shame around not reaching them, or not reaching them in the time they believed to be the right amount of time it would take them. This can be challenging, because we often judge ourselves enough already, and then to throw in more judgement and pressure on unrealized goals can take its toll on you.
And that weight will stop you from moving forward.
Or at the very least, slow you down. To make matters harder, you'e not only not where you want to be, now you have yourself, and possibly others judging you. You may even have mounting responsibilities that you feel are keeping you further and further from your goals, slowing down the already slow timeline.
So what to do?
More often than not, what slows us down is actually taking steps backwards, when we should be simply moving forward, albeit slowly. You see, you don't have to go fast.
Going fast is overrated.
You must be consistent, and not go backwards.
And if you haven't guessed it by now, what causes us to go backwards is not only not having developed the appropriate habits to push us forward and be resilient in times of stress, but it's the self-sabotaging habits and thought patterns we engage in.
If this is you, and you have ever found yourself in a negative thought cycle, you'll be pleased to know you can change it today. Once you realize that the majority of bad habits and negative thought patterns stem from a lack of self love, you'll be equipped to start the process of loving yourself and disengaging in self-sabotaging patterns of both thought and behavior.
Self love is the foundation of personal development, from which all good and sustainable habits emerge.
And it's easy to tell if you have a strong level of self love or not.
When you love yourself, you don't treat yourself poorly. Some examples are:
- poor eating habits
- poor relationship choices
- speaking poorly to yourself
- allowing others to speak poorly to you
- abusing your body with drugs and alcohol
So, to start for this week, simply examine your habits and take note of any of these mentioned or others you may know about, and simple write them down.
Acknowledge them.
Acknowledge the behavior that you know is not in your best interest, and bring it to the forefront of your conscious.
That's it.
Thanks for reading :)
Next week we'll talk about ways to go from simply recognizing the lack of self-love (huge accomplishment) to actually installing self-love like a computer program that will guide all your behavior.
